Conway, Faulkner County, AR

Executive Summary

Conway is home to three universities: the University of Central Arkansas, a public state school, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist College, both private institutions. UCA, originally founded by the Arkansas State Legislature in 1907 as Arkansas State Normal School, was intended to be primarily a teacher's college. The college's mission to train future teachers diversified in 1967 to include liberal arts as well as other fields of study. Today, UCA has an established business school, nationally-ranked honors college, and nationally-ranked nursing, physical and occupational therapy programs. UCA is listed among the country's Top 25 Regional Southern Universities (U.S. News and World Report). With a student population of 11,487, UCA is the largest university in Conway and the 6th largest in the state.

Hendrix College was originally named Central Institute and was founded in Altus, Arkansas in 1876, making it one of the oldest universities in the state. Through several name changes, the college was purchased in 1884 by the conferences of the Southern Methodist Churches of Arkansas and relocated to Conway among the country's top National Liberal Arts Colleges (U.S. News and World Report). Hendrix's top degree programs are pre-medical and nursing fields, as well as social sciences and liberal arts. The student population is estimated at 1,328.

In 1892, Central College was formed through a committee of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention tasked with the goal of founding an educational institute specifically for women in the areas of business, society, and home building. The school functioned successfully until 1947. Five years the campus was empty, but in 1952, the Arkansas Missionary Baptist Association purchased the school, and by September of the same year, the doors of the college were open again. The name Central Baptist College was adopted ten years later. Today, CBC provides a range of Christian leadership studies, business degrees, as well as other fields of study, such as psychology, journalism, kinesiology, and education. U.S. News and World and News Report listed CBC among the top Regional Colleges in the south. The current student population is estimated to be 824.
